As France embarked upon her bloody revolution in 1789, La Boulaye was a man with no personal grievance against the aristocracy - until his employer, the Marquis de Fresnoy de Bellecour, ruthlessly beat and dismissed him for falling in love with Suzanne, his beautiful daughter. Faced with no job and an uncertain destiny, La Boulaye devoted himself to the cause of the Revolution. Four years later, at the height of the aristocratic executions, Beulaye comes face to face with the Marquis once more - yet now it is he who holds the power and his former master who must beg for mercy. The Trampling of the Lilies was written in the year 1906 by Rafael Sabatini. This book is one of the most popular novels of Rafael Sabatini, and has been translated into several other languages around the world.

Sabatini was dismissive of his earlier novels, but I enjoy some of them even more than a couple of his late works. "The Trampling of the Lilies" is one of those early gems. Yes, it lacks the historical detail of his later writing, but it more than makes up for that with a compelling story and an engaging, nail-biting romance between two who are very much from different sides of the tracks. Set during the French Revolution, "The Trampling of the Lilies" features an exceptionally non-aristocratic hero, a heroine with much to learn, and some really loathsome villains. If you want a page-turner written with elegance and filled with action, intrigue, and romance, look no further.Product details

The Trampling Of The Lilies Rafael Sabatini 9781542377515 Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book because it feels like historical fiction more than simply fiction. I learned more about the French Revolution in this book than many other history books!
This is a good, sound, albeit early and somewhat weak, Sabatini novel. It's his first in the setting he handled best, revolutionary France. The style is mostly vintage Sabatini, though the plot is somewhat weak by his later standards; the ending works both intellectually and emotionally, though the mature Sabatini would have come up with something more satisfying. The plot, as usual, is assisted by coincidences and characters acting in the one way they would obviously avoid; but it avoids the unacceptable holes of most of his earlier novels.
This is a wonderful historical fiction. Full of action, adventure, love and history, of course. I loved this book from first to last. Rafael Sabatini has an exquisite writing style. And in the 3 books I have read of his so far, he always has me laughing with wondrous amusement at the great lengths of foolishness the main male character will go to for the "love of his life". The men are not foolish throughout the book, usually only once, maybe twice, but it is amusing and has me hopeful that real men of honor everywhere go to great lengths for the woman they love. If I could change one thing about Sabitini's books, it is that they not end so abruptly. They are not bad endings, but they end before I wish them to.
This is the worst Sabatini book I have ever read. He writes as if Robespierre was a okay guy and not a villain. He also makes out all aristocrats to be bad. I liked Scaramouch which is one of his other books on the French Revolution. If this is your first Sabatini book try Captain Blood or Mistress Wilding.
